'Cold Iron' I always understood to be cold-forged iron.  Not a steel,
then, nor anything likely to be lying about.  It would need to be made
especially.

As for _why_ it would work, perhaps the cold forging process removes the
natural magnetic properties?  Or at least, when done by a knowledgable
smith?
