In our campaign, we had the infamous Ian of Kanzango, boomeranger 
extraordinaire. When the campaign ended, I think he had somewhere in the range
of a 17 DX or so. He could knock the head of a charging troll at 15 paces.
The player had discovered that the boomerang was the most cost-effective
missile weapon in the game. Even though we all did some min-maxing on our
characters, we were also good roleplayers, and had great fun.

I like your idea of ST-based damage. And, yes, giant boomerangers *is* a
scary thought.
