Much of this can be abated by intelligent design and/or
clearing of dungeons.  For example, its practically 
impossible for a party to take on several major monsters
in a row without having to cart along healing of some
sort.  To me, the TFT model of combat lends itself more
toward the idea of a cave setting inhabited by a single
major monster with a number of less capable servants/etc.
rather than the D&D dungeon model of having to battle 
your way through 15 levels of a dungeon in order to get
to the major encounter.
