Everyone is breathing hard. Chests heaving in the damp garden. The
back of The Cathedral looms before you. Its tall third spire with a cross
keeping the area safe.
One of the monks speaks. ``I don't think putting crosses everywhere in
the city is going to work.''
Another monk adds with labored breathing ``I agree. We need a real
plan to deal with the problem.''
A third monk says ``The fires around the city won't keep them from
flying straight up, and getting away.''
After a short rest, y'all go into The Cathedral. It is empty and your
footsteps echo on the stone walls. Somehow you know that each stone was
shipped here. New Orleans is a swamp. There are no rocks for hundreds of
miles.
Y'all pass through the front doors into the square and head over to the
Presbyteree and your quarters. At a table in the kitchen some food and
drink is prepared. Sipping coffee new ideas are discussed. One monk
proposes making cross shaped filters for lanterns. They could project a
beam of light some mega hexes distant projecting a cross of light. ``It
would be very useful in chasing them off of roofs.'' Everyone agrees and
these things will be made.
You finish off some eggs and toast, then decide to go back out looking
for Roget. Two of the monks insist on coming with you. For protection.
They quickly take a sheet of copper, cut out a cross, and apply it to a
lantern. The three of you set off for Bourbon street.
The party is still going strong and the street is full. Almost half
the people you encounter flee your presence. One of the monks says ``It's
spreading quickly.''
You find Roget by following the black smoke coming out of the walls of
one building. He is with several other rat catchers, all slightly younger
but still old. He reports.
``Nothing. Not one of them. They seem to be immune to smoke. I can
hear them in the walls but they aren't coming out.'' He looks concerned.
They have a small portable iron stove with a pipe coming out of it that is
fed into a hole they cut in the wall. It is burning coal. They have canvas
bags with round wooden collars held to the base boards. That must have been
where they were hoping to drive the rats. The bags are flat and empty.
Roget orders the team ``Pack it up.'' They pick up the bags. There are
mouse holes on the baseboards where each bag had been. On of them closes
the door to the small portable stove, pulls the pipe out of the wall and
caps it. Another man with a carpenters belt puts a round panel in the wall
they had cut out and begins patching it. You, Roget, and the monks steep
out to the street.
Several people passing by are startled by your presence and run off.
Three wizards on the other side of the street just laugh. It is an evil
laugh. One of them speaks. ``We know you, Lubik.'' They summon creatures
to fight for them. Roll for initiative.

The rat catchers can use their poles as spears doing 1-1 damage. They
will not join the fight until the second turn. Issuing from the door of the
building with three MA left if they action that turn. The summoned
creatures can not move or act on the turn they are summoned. The wizards
are on a mission and will fight to the death. They are also too smart to be
affected by holy symbols so there is no reason for the monks to try the
lantern on them.
