Re: (TFT) Wizard talent templates

Hello list,

I think what we're getting at is that we want wizards to be able to
specialize,
and hero's to be able to have some greater access to spells. Here some
preliminary ideas for talents along these lines. I am taking ideas from
several previous
posts, so forgive me if I use your idea and forget to credit you.

Using Rick's idea of "spell mastery":

***
"Spell is times 2 memory cost:
No critical failures, any critical failure
simply costs you 1 fST. (Missile spells cost full
fatigue and miss their target instead of giving
you magical backlash.)
Spells cost 10% less fST (round down), so
a spell that costs 19 fST would cost you 18 fST.
A spell that costs 20 fST would also cost 18 fST."
***

SPELLCASTING: OBSTACLES (IQ 12) (3) prerequisite.: The ability to use
magic.
Wizards do not need to take this talent and gain no benfits from having it.
Ability to
cast obstacle-type (Wall, Fire, etc.) spells. A character who has this
talent knows
and understands the practical aspects of casting obstacle-type spells only
and may
learn these spells at double the normal IQ cost for Wizards. May cast these
spells at
-1 DX. Spells must be learned through instuction and practice (see AW pg.
10)
unless they know Literacy [and maybe Wizard's Tongue]. Note: This talent
does not
convey any theoretical understanding of magic and user does not know how to
research new spells.

*
Talents like this could exist for each "specialty" and can be as narrow or
broad
as the GM desires. The IQ cost should be adusted to suit the campaign and
the scope of the talent as required.
*

SPELLMASTERY: OBSTACLES (IQ14) [3] prerequisite: Know 3 obstacle spells,
one for at least 5 years. This talent may only be taken by Wizards. The
wizard has
an in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of obstacle spells. Wizard
gains
"mastery" (see above) of all obstacle spells they have known for at least
one
year and any future obstacles spells they learn after only one year of
having learned
them. "The wizard to more finely control the shape of [obstacle] spells
(but not
increase their volume), allowing for instance, a Create Wall to be used to
create a
temporary staircase." [From Stan <srydzews@ix.netcom.com>] Wizard may
research new obstacle spells in 80% of the normal time required for spell
research.
New obstacle spells are learned as if they are 2 IQ lower.

*
Once again, talents like this could exist for each specialty and should be
adjusted to
suit the campaign.

I like the idea of adding some "flavour" like that which Stan suggested that
goes
beyond the basics of spell mastery. The memory costs should be set so that
heros and wizards will not take more than one or two variations of these
talents.

Let me know what you think. I'd like to hear people's versions for other
speciaties and what some of the "flavour" could be like.

Yours in Cidri,

Matt
