Yes, it is different, but I was trying to come up with something
short of allowing every weapon talent the wizard has ever heard
of--which would seem to be the only limit with a total-flexibility
approach.

Stan, all,
I think the only way a wizard can make any creature/ any wepon combination is with illusion. I've always felt the summoning spells are intended to be very specific. But I've always felt they should have armor. Garygoyles have armor, but their summoning spell doesn't list it. This seems wrong.

This all raises the question of what the Summon Myrmidon spell is
really doing:

Is this supposed to be a real person drawn from some alternate
dimension (The Dimension of Broadsword-wielding Maniacs)? --
Something akin to the Elenoin, I guess.

Does the spell summon a random individual from among all those
(either here or in another dimension) who fit its stat and talent
criteria?

Or is the spell temporarily creating a pseudo-person out of nothing?
Quite a sophisticated spell, in that case, to actually create an
IQ 8 intelligence from nothing.

Or perhaps the myrmidon is summoned from a warrior's paradise,
a la the D&D Horn of Vahalla? This could explain the standardized
equipment selection. But if so then where do the summoned bears
come from, a bear's paradise?

Great questions Stan. This, to me, is the crux of a GM's specific campaign. And, how one GM's campaign differs from another. First of all the players are slow to ask these kind of questions. In fact they often never do. This gives the GM plenty of time to address them when and if they want. Is the GM running a multi dimension campaign? Are summoned bears able to go back to "summoned bear" land and tell the other bears about the wizard that just summoned them? If so a wizard may develope a reputation with certain summoned creatures. I lean in this direction. And have had several players who were famous with demons, for summoning so many, so often. One demon had heard his name called by another player and brought that name back with him. The next time we played he found himself summoned by a demon to fight for 12 turns. Turn about is fair play.
