I agree that a minimum IQ threshold (at least) is needed to keep the 'feel' 
right. As for the problem with multi-hex figures, that may be less of a problem 
in my campaign than in most because of the way mine is set up. 

(The rule I decided on for casting spells on multi hex creatures is normal 
cost for up to 3 hexes, double for 4-8 hexes, triple for 9-15 hexes, 4x for 
16-24 hexes etc.)

The only multi-hex PC race in my game is the Giant. The other large beings in 
Etan are animals or divine/demonic beings. The animals I wouldn't allow to 
pay St for spells anyway (I don't even allow them to do this for the book magic 
items that cost St to use.) And the big divine/demonic beings really ought to 
be able to share spells due to their supernatural nature even if human wizards 
can't.
