Re: RE: (TFT) Magic Item Economics]



Well, I've made my sheet. I've churned the numbers and discovered some
interesting things, based on the following assumptions:

1. A wizard will want to net the following weekly profits if he sells the item
at the indicated fair market value: ~$300 per week for lesser magic items or
weapon/armor enchantments and ~$500 for greater magic items. These amounts go
up a bit for projects lasting more than a week because of the weekly chance of
ruining the project.

2. Wizard's Lab is rented at $150 per week + $50 per week in materials.

3. Each apprentice provides 25 ST/day and costs $50/week ($25 salary; $25 room
& board)

4. The wizard can provide 25 ST/day

5. For projects requiring more than one wizard (as opposed to apprentices),
each wizard will need the same weekly profit as indicated in #1.

6. All materials are available at the listed fair market values

In general, the TFT book values of items are *very* close to the calculated
values. Most items vary only about 10% or less, which is probably due to
rounding, rather than sloppy math. This fact speaks highly of Steve Jackson
and Draper Kaufman, in my opinion.

However, a few items are *way* off. In particular, the costs for 1 point ST
batteries are too low -- at $1000, this is the cost of the gem. Of course, if
you assume that the price does not include the gem, the listed prices are
closer

Items that are way too cheap in the original rules:

ST battery (1 point) - $1429 less than it should be

Magic Fist - $862 less than it should be

+1 Weapon/Armor Enchantment - $286 less than it should be

ST battery (5 points) - $1109 less than it should be

Geas - $1082 less than it should be

Increase one attribute (+1) - $421 less than it should be

Wards - $1057 less than each one should be

Zombie Ring - $477 less than it should be

Amulet of Skepticism - $582 less than it should be

Magic Fist rod (1 point) - $132 less than it should be

Lens of Translation - $642 less than it should be



Items that are way too expensive in the original rules:



7 hex Magic Carpet - 30,828 too expensive

4 hex Magic Carpet - 7,931 too expensive

Charm (+2) - 17,381 too expensive

Crystal Ball - 6,362 too expensive

Long-Distance Teleport - 5,756 too expensive
