Look again, he was actually striking the edge, not the side, on the table. The failure probably had more to do with cheap materials than bad technique. I think the 'problem' with his technique was that he was hitting an unyielding surface rather than a surface that had some give to it. Live and hopefully learn two things: Never use cheap display only reproductions to do a real job and never strike steel against an unyielding surface.

Laugh! Ya. But it is a pretty good example of how just smacking the blade sideways on something hard can snap a blade - which could very reasonably be expected to happen unintentionally during combat. Of course that blade was probably also fairly crummy.
