What about something along the lines of this
Light pistol (.22 to .380)       1d-1
medium pistol(.38special to .40) 2d-2
heavy pistol (.44mag, .45, 10mm) 3d-3
lt shotgun   (.410, 20ga)        3d-3
med shotgun  (16ga, 12ga)        4d-4
hvy shotgun  (10ga, 8ga )        5d-5
lt rifle     (.222,.223 )        3d-3
med rifle    (.30, 7mm, .300)    4d-4
hvy rifles   (.40+ calibers )    6d-6

3 round burst double damage, double armor (makes sense)
full auto burst from minigun, smg or mg damage x Xd6, armor 
quadrupled.

Also with small arms increase chance for critical hit miss
critical hit - 3 triple, 4-5 double, 6-7 automatic hit
critical miss -18 backfire 1/2 damage to operator, 17-16 critical 
jam 2-12 rounds to clear, 15-14 automatic miss
