I've been thinking about this for some time as 
well - will really be interesting to see what 
you've come up with!  My solution revolved 
around the idea of "levels" - each level was
about 2 feet high.  Prone humans were on Level
1 for LOS purposes, Kneeling humans were on 
Level 2, Standing humans were on level 3.  But
the LOS of rules were still cumbersome, unless
you were willing to bite the trig bullet.  Greg
Costikyan tried to address this in his SPI game
"Vector 3", but it didn't work out too well.
