Maybe it is the engineer in me, but I would 
soon be asking questions like how does the
dirt get out of the hole, if he is shoring 
up the sides of the pit, and what he is 
doing about water seepage once he reaches 
the water table.

The turns system (where he is 12.3 m deep
and the others are having a fun adventure) 
sounds eminently sensible.
