Okay, wait, yeah, you're right, I didn't see Advanced Melee page 33..."if the
pole weapon user (or other figure) moves through a hex the pikeman could have
hit (see diagram) then the pikeman may take his attack THEN, during the
movement phase." So the pikeman gets to attack during the movement phase,
before he gets trampled.
 
Another counter to the trample-charge is to simply stack up your polearms into
multiple ranks. That way the multi-hex figure can't attempt a push-trample
because there's no clear space to push into. Or, on the ends of the formation,
even if the horseman does manage a trample, he's now getting a grounded
polearm attack from the fellow in the second rank. Kudos, again, I suppose, to
the author (Steve Jackson?) for providing a legitimate reason to deploy your
polearms the way they were historically deployed.

On this point I disagree.   A line of Pike stand up very well, perfectly in
fact.  One lone pikeman... not so much.
