Okay, as I mentioned, this is a section, township, and range hex.
Drawing as a square hex, it's 16 square miles in area, and it's practically 1228 BattleMap hexes (1.3m) per mile or across one square (there's 13 again).
It's a little under 5000 BM hexes across the STR hex, or about 500 BattleMaps n/s.
This is a very useful travel scale and applies to existing mapping conventions.
I can lay out a county map in hexes without a ton of difficulty.

I believe I've posted how to get to Henline Mountain from my front door using this scale.
Also if hex height is considered to be a hexagonal column proportional to the diameter of the hex, then 15 STR hexes get us to the beginning of space.

I don't usually need hexes for Orbits and ballistics.
Not until you get to space engines anyway...

So anyway an STR hex is a little under 25 million BM hexes in area.
