Well sure, the player did work worthy of inclusion in your gameworld as a 
kind of style.
Put the players in a "survival" situation where they can get nothing 
manufactuared and the creative uses for the materials that construct an item 
become interesting form a gameplay pov. IMO.

Naturally.  The players all get to work just about whatever they want into the game world.  But not just by thinking about it, you have to discuss it for it to become part of the shared game world.  The extra sharpness shave-off is only the player's contribution if I leave it open and he discusses his view and it becomes part of the shared game world.  If you document the incremental sharpness coefficient up front, the player just cleverly uses the schtick you gave him in the shave-off, he has not contributed to the world.  As I see it,  he has exploited the cheat code in Civ seven.  rather than design an adventure in Spores..

The talking is what makes the creation work.  So the bits of the world  the players care about get the shared creative attention, and the other bits don't.
  
So: Green silk brocade and gold thread for piping on the bard's  armor? check.

Expensive goblin brandy impprted from the north county for the scholars vice? check.

Mysterious family doom foretold by the wizards crazy aunt in a prophetic dream when she (the wizard) was still a child? check.

Contribute whatever you can, but contribute it, don't just keep it inside,  how can I weave that prophesy into the gameworld and have the culmination brewing, and awaiting your discovery, if you don't share it?  (If the game ever starts up again the party is about 2 or 3 sessions away from bumping into it's culmination, whether they recognize it is another matter).

Now the prophesy figures in more than the brocade, or the scholars colorful hat and clothing (foppish dandy that he is), but come the day that a length of silk brocade and gold thread is used to help with their survival, it may be crucial
