My understanding is Gygax added fantasy stuff to Jeff Perrin's miniature
wargame, Chainmail. Arneson used the Chainmail system to resolve combats in his
RPG of Blackmoor. Arneson introduced Gygax to his game and they decided to
collaborate. So the roleplaying concept belongs to Arneson but the mechanics
belong to Gygax.
