I disagree. Most scientists (closest thing we have to wizards, I think) are mainly interested in their craft and in recognition of their work. If they can get enough power to further their ends (research leading to possible construction of some neat-o gizmo like an atomic bomb, power station, fusion generator) they're satisfied with that and don't bother to change their socks very often.

I think most wizards would be the same. Note that in all the classic literature, wizards are almost always solo acts (Merlin, Morgan) except when we get farther into modern day literature (Tolkein) where there's more emphasis on conquering the world. But the occasional power-crazed loony aside, Gandalf and Radagast the Brown are more representative than Saruman and Sauron. Sure they dabble in politics and world events occasionally, but the rest of the time they research Hobbit feet, squirrel droppings and eagle flight patterns.
There are also only a few of them in all of ME... as opposed to the numbers in TFT,where you'll have dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands in a given village/town/city.

I think the aspect of TFT that might be least realistic is that you can find Wizards to go adventuring so easily, unless they are trying to find some artifact or further their skills.

That depends more on the player playing the wizard than anything else.

And replying to my own reply:

Amusing bit of history, more along the lines of some opinions here I
disagree with.

That being that I don't think human nature allows for most wizards to
just hole up and work on their art for art's sake stuff. They'll go for
power.
