Space Travel Re: (TFT) please help

Pick an existing space game you like and use it. There are many good tactical space games to choose from. Or if that's overkill, see Traveler, GURPS Space, or even better, GURPS Traveler (and then maybe dumb it down to TFT level of detail).

For Trekkies, there is Star Fleet Battles (or for less hard core Trekkies, the FASA Star Trek RPG).

For people more hard core realist than probably anyone on this list, see Attack Vector: Tactical (3D inertial combat in great detail).

And/or use a computer sim.
