Oh, I just meant to provide feedback from someone who does know the original series, and went through a Star Fleet Battles phase. Which is not to say that in another sci fi spinning it wouldn't make sense to head for density in the galactic center. For example, if inhabited planets were rarer than Star Trek, and/or if the more interesting ones were in that direction for whatever reason. 

Also it was interesting you bringing up the "wagon train in space" analogy, because that also seems accurate to me in the way that the "wild west" featured widely spread cities and outposts across a great distance that could be traveled, while leaving plenty of wild lands to discover and adventure inside the frontiers of the US territories.
