(TFT) Adding a Kicker die to TFT. - Patterns on dice.

Hi all,
I was reading about the Schlock Mercenary rpg (in development on kick
starter), and a couple ideas in it were very clever and could be adapted
to TFT.

For example, they roll 3d6 but one die is a different color. (Called the
mayhem die in that game.) If you roll to hit, succeed in hitting and the
mayhem die is lower than both of the other dice, you have a critical hit
(draw a card).

Some weapons blow up if you roll triples.

  Other auto-hit if you roll a straight (e.g. 3-4-5, or 1-2-3).

Others will do an bonus hit if you roll doubles on the 3 dice, (e.g. 4-4-2).

The idea behind this is that you get finer granularity when you look at
weird patterns of the dice rather than just totals.

So how can this be used in TFT?

Talents like fencing can give you bonuses for certain patterns. For example,
if you hit and have rolled doubles, enemy's physical armor is halved round
down. (You found a weak spot.)

Talents where certain patterns give you a parry. If your attack gives you a
straight then you can automatically block one attack by a lower DX figure
made on you later in the turn.

I have some talents that make your shields more powerful. If ENEMY's odd
colored kicker die pairs with one of his other dice when you have this talent,
your shield stops double.

etc.

If rolling 4+ dice, we would likely want to distinguish the base three which
these rules are based on, and which are extra. (Or maybe we WANT to
have higher chances of pairs, triples?) A 3 long straight is very easy on
4 dice, but a 4 long straight is harder.)

As for non-combat talents. Anyone with a higher level talent (e.g. Master
Armorer, Master Thief, Diving Talent or Master Naturalist) who rolls better with
their kicker die than the two gets a significant bonus. e.g. the lock is picked in
half time, something along that level of bonus. A nice bonus for people who
upgrade talents to higher levels.

I am not suggesting any detailed rules. Just putting the idea out there for
other people to chew on if they want.

To do this well, you would want to adjust a fair number of TFT rules. On the
other hand, I have been planning to do a big revision of my Talent List...

:D

Warm regards, Rick.
