Re: (TFT) Rewrite of Melee simulator in JavaScript

Yep.  That's about what I thought.  I note in GURPS Man-to-Man he
claims that pole-arms are the way to go and that armor is absolutely neces
sary for all but the absolute greatest of warriors, and even then it's desi
rable.  This seems to be a reflection of the difficulties he had with
pole-arms and armor in TFT -- which, thanks to HT being such a sh*t, was ne
ver satisfactorily resolved.  I note also that the entire experience s
ystem is revamped to give the players a much more "resource management" int
ensive experience in terms of improving attributes, increasing old skills,
or learning new ones.  Much like what Dark City Games did in their rev
ised TFT-ish system.

While he changed the basic TFT system quite a bit with GURPS, it's easy to
see where it all came from.
Seems to me that the entire idea of "impaling" damage in GURPS was designed
to enable an otherwise relatively weak weapon (in terms of actual damage)
to inflict killing blows.  Of course, it also works very well with fir
earms -- something that in TFT has to be handled by grossly inflated damage
dice.  Overall, I still prefer the relative simplicity of TFT, but I
sure see where he was coming from in Man-to-Man and Orcslayer.  (My bi
ggest problem with GURPS is that the entire system is now so completely blo
ated that it's almost incomprehensible, with it's massive plethora of advan
tages, disadvantages, quirks, specialties, exceptions and special cases. Had he kept it relatively simple in GURPS with a magical supplement tha
t was like Man-to-Man instead of a huge rules compendium, I might have drop
ped TFT entirely and moved over to GURPS.  Instead the system lurched
almost immediately into rules bloat and it was just too much for someone wh
o was also starting a career and a family....)

I'm thinking that Steve Jackson nerfed them for a reason with the second ed
ition....  But I don't remember what Advanced Melee has them at.

Yeah, that's a funny one.

Melee first edition spear damage 1 + 2
Melee second and third edition is 1 + 1
Melee fourth and fifth edition is 1 + 2

There are similar differences with chainmail and plate mail.

My exhaustive (some might say anal) investigation of Melee / Wizard
versions is still in progress, but based on what I have seen so far, it is
my belief that Howard started with the first edition text when creating the
fourth edition.
