Yes, but we're not talking about pikes here.  Halberds and the like
aren't used that way, they're swung.  AM has rules for pikes, and 
they do indeed work as you describe.  

I've read about manuals from the 1600's detailing how to *duel* with 
halberds.  When these things are used properly they are suprisingly
flexible in their usage (and contrary to what AM might claim, they
didn't weigh 22 pounds - although of course all the weapon weights 
in AM are totally ridiculous.)
