THAIL UPDATE 532.160
After successfully killing the evil Grymaug, our heroes returned to
Saripa, the capital of the Kingdom of Chanfee on the northern coast of the
continent Thail. Father Paul discovers he has new orders from the church
and must return to Naitri, so he wishes the heroes well, says his goodbyes,
and takes a sailing ship north.
Some time passes while Humar (a human archer) and his men work mundane
jobs and look for more mercenary work. Humar hires a new merc named Var, an
experienced seaman who also seems even more experienced with a sword.
Three months later there is a rash of disappearances in the Jeweler's
Quarter. Rumors start to circulate about some kind of monster that preys
upon people walking about at night, and townspeople fear for their lives and
make sure they get home and under lock and key before sundown. Several
screams have been heard in the dark from the monster's victims, but there is
no one there -- not even a body -- when the city watch arrives.
About two weeks after the start of the terror, Hobben (big guy, big
sword, impossibly shiny plate armor) is walking home from a tavern when he
passes by an alley and hears a thump -- like a body hitting the
cobblestones. Hobben looks back around the corner to see half a dozen
griefs dragging a man's body towards a manhole. Hobben shoots one with a
lightning bolt and kills it, and the rest chase after him. Fortunate he
makes a clean getaway. Coming back to the scene with the city watch in tow,
no evidence is found except for a lightning-scorched hunk of grief lying on
the ground.
Unfortunately the next morning Humar is discovered missing from his room
at the inn. Apparently he never returned home the previous night. A search
is made of all of his known haunts but he is not found.
Later that day Elvick (an alchemist and physicker) is doing lab work in
the Wizard Guild's school wing, finishing up his training to learn the Heal
spell. Breaking glass is heard down the nearby stairs in the adjoining
hall. Investigating he runs into a hoard of griefs coming up the stairs!
He runs and raises an alarm. Two of the griefs attack Elvick while the rest
race into the alchemist lab, grab lots of equipment and supplies, and race
back down the stairs. A guild guard runs up and helps Elvick fight off his
adversaries, and eventually the griefs are driven off. Later a grief-sized
hole is discovered in the basement wall leading to the city's underground
sewer system.
(The next day Elvick has to explain to his instructor, "The griefs ate my
homework!")
Next morning our heroes strap on their weapons, armor, and magic and
enter the sewer system to try and rescue Humar. After a few hours' search
they come to a basement underneath an abandoned tavern on the bad side of
town. The basement looks like a hobbit-sized alchemy lab, and several
beakers and other pieces of equipment are seen on tables against the walls.
Above them are about a dozen bags full of greenish goop hanging from hooks
in the ceiling. In the corner is a large cage with Humar and two other
humans inside -- apparently alive but asleep.
Two dozen griefs boil out of passages to the west, north, and east and
attack the party! After a brief but intense fight most of the griefs have
been killed and three have run away to the north and made a getaway. Humar
and two others are rescued.
Later that afternoon, with the help of the city watch, the heroes do a
systematic search of Saripa's sewer system. Three griefs are cornered and
killed. Most people are "pretty sure" that all of the griefs have been
eliminated.
