Your certainly free to do that and some campaigns would make that much more
appropriate (modern horror for instance), but keep in mind that you WONT be
treating the heros and wizards equally.

There wont BE any heroes. Just wizards...

Unless you start with a vision of what your character is going to be, then damned the rules if they benefit wizards and you want to run a merchant priest who will have nothing to do with magic. In fact a bunch of witch burning zealots who wish to bring down all the wizard class! An' kill any player who thinks that they're too good to be a hero...er...I digress...
