maybe there are cysts up to 1km across which are like mega-geodes and great
to mine for gems (semi precious), which the dwarves then trade with
outside - maybe there are silicon based life forms there (visiting earth
elementals)
Also, in these areas are deep-earth vents with strange nutrient gases
(equivalent of the H2S vents deep under the sea for inspiration) with a
whole strage ecology........
