Re: (TFT) Rick's comments on Red Rock
Rick,
yes, Uluru (the aboriginal term which is what everbody calls Ayer's Rock
these days) is a monolith and the 2nd biggest in the world after the one
outside Atlanta GA (Mt Augustus??). It is sandstone and there are plenty of
caves around the base and some springs I think.
There is another one about half as big and made of granite called Bald Rock
which rises at 45 degrees roght out of a eucalypt forest and was equally as
cool to climb (I have done both)
http://www.acn.net.au/articles/1999/06/uluru.htm
(scroll down for Bald Rock)
Additionally, the top of Uluru undulates with an amplitude of about 2m (just
right for ambushes) it is all red-orange looking and very hard to realise
that there are loads of 1-2m deep furrows.....)
cheers,
Cas
