(TFT) Dominions II
The question of speed movement on horses reminds me to mention to the group
an under-publicized but very interesting and extremely well done strategy
computer game called Dominions II (see
www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/d2/1.htm ). The character stats are in line
with TFT (10 average human, 20 getting to be superhuman, armor reduces
damage/speed/skill, combat tactical, unpredictable, and everyone is
vulnerable), and the game is very rich and involves elements of roleplaying
as well as strategy. All characters are tracked for morale, fatigue,
experience, equipment, lasting injuries, etc. Heaps of good and imaginative
stuff going on there, which I think would be attractive to TFT players (as
opposed to most computer RPG games, which tend to be vaguely D&D-based) so
I highly recommend trying out the demo.
The reason speed movement brought it to mind is that Dominions has some
neat ways of balancing magic which speeds up characters. It makes you go
faster, which is a huge advantage, but it doesn't increase your ability to
recover from fatigue, and fatigue builds up very quickly when you double
your speed. I thought I would try building a super warrior using a
four-armed natajara in Dominions, forging swords of quickness for each arm
which could attack twice per turn each... but the result was only deadly
for the first few attacks, and then the natajara became too tired to fight
well, especially when I had bad luck and got an injury that increased
effective encumbrance.
I figure a warhorse given the ability to double its speed might get very
tired very quickly if it used it much, which would be a logical and
interesting way to limit its ability to become an uber-weapon.
