Re: (TFT) 18's & broken weapons
Well, I'm reluctant to speak up but to add my two cents to this matter...
Because of the reputedly common situations where combatants have to un-bend and
straighten their swords in combat, perhaps reflecting that might be a nice
compromise here.
Thus on an 18:
- improvised, corroded, or lower-than-usual quality weapons break
- swords bend
- wooden-hafted weapons break if being used against edged weapons,
are dropped otherwise
- knives, short swords and metal hafted
weapons (maces, primarily) are dropped
Straightening a bent sword requires an action and a dex roll, repeat until you
succeed or roll another 18, which truly does break it. Or take it to an armorer
who can straighten it automatically with a forge and a half hour's work. You
can fight with a bent sword at -4 DX and damage.
Fine weapons are immune at their customary rates to breaking and bending.
Also I seem to recall at one point suggesting that W/A enchantment could be cast
as armor on a weapon, each plus adding one point the 'saving roll' against
breakage that fine weapons have (or adding to zero, for normal quality wpns).
