My current DM ( who is running a D&D campaign, 
arrgh ) has done some extensive work in this 
area - but then he's been building his world 
for approx 25 years.  To me, its the old real-
ism vs playability bugaboo again.  If food
production is an important part of your cam-
paign, then by all means represent it.  Other-
wise, its just fluff.
