That was funny. I can image Elivish sludge cleanup crews in green 
environmental suits cleaning up the black muck on the river banks 
cursing those damn dwarves up in the mountains.

As for the mines of Moria the dwarves took advantage of the myriad 
natural caves and tunnels that riddled the Misty Mountains. They mainly 
tunneled to open more caverns, create mine shafts to look for mythril 
and other ore and to carve out their massive halls or deeps. They also 
made use of the natural tunnels and caves and made them into finished 
passageways and halls. There was probably plenty of deep places to dump 
what material they dug out. For example they never sounded the great 
chasm over which they built Durin's Bridge.

As for the elves, they were more than happy to get their hands on 
mythril.  Many high-elves of Lindon settled on the western side of the 
Misty Mountains just for this reason, in the land later named Eregion. 
They even etched the designs on the doors that Gandalf has to open in 
"Fellowship".
