This can easily backfire, though.
GM: Let's start. You're stripped naked and chained to a wall in a dungeon.
Player: I sit there huddled in a knot of misery and wait to die.
GM: Looking around, you see-
Player: I don't look around.
GM: What?
Player: Why should I? If my captors are competent enough to get me into this
hole, they're certainly competent enough to keep me from escaping.
GM: But...
Player: Look, let's just abstract my death from hunger, thirst and exposure,
rather than playing it out, OK?
