Effectively half-plate?

There's enough variation in Japanese armour in general that it would be
classified as whatever you'd like. What you ask is roughly equivalent to
"How would one classify a knight's armour?"

Some is lacquered rawhide. Would you call that leather?

Some is lacquered iron. Would you call that plate?

Some is a bit of both...

It's really more a matter of style than of protective quality.

(Said from a perspecitve of making and wearing both.)
