1. Yes a slung shield protects (at -1, as for other attacks) against those
missile attacks that come through the rear hexside.

2. There is a Front diagram for ranged hexes in Melee (not sure about
Advanced Melee), showing J is in E's front facing. Front includes the
spine hexes 90 degrees left and right of "due front".
    The two spines between Rear and Side, I don't remember offhand the
official rule for TFT.
