Hi John,
  In my campaign he can do a two hex jab (with out 
talents) but it only does the one point of damage.
The staff must also be long enough to reach which
makes it a bit awkward but that is usually not a 
big deal.

  If the wizard wants his staff to do, say, spear 
damage as well as the magical shock he or she must:

1) Put a wooden point on it (less damage than a real spear).

2) Take the spear talent.
