Perhaps it is laziness that is facilitated probably by certain email programs
that don't inspire us to act appropriately.

I would add that it's hard even for those who don't digest.
I like to think of the following points when I reply (most email programs will
allow these things, but you have to work at it):
1) Attribute (the writer of the message to whom I'm replying)
2) Contextualize (my answer to the part of the message that's important)
3) Trim (what's not needed)
I just realized - it has a nice mnemonic to it: ACT
Step 1 is usually done by the mail program; steps 2 and 3 require some
cognitive effort, but not much more than stopping at a red light or adding up 3
six-sided dice, especially once you get the hang of it.
