David,Okay, it makes complete sense when you put it like that. The problem is that the AW doesn't explain this in such a clear manner. In fact, probably due either to an organic cognitive deficiency or too much fun in college, I don't see any of this in the text. AW seems to jump back and forth between creating and purchasing magical items. Under "Cost of Magical Items", you get the impression that a caster would pay the book value adjusted for multiple spells, etc...not just a purchaser. In the "Example" under the same heading it begins "You wish to cast a [spell]" and then includes the book price in the "cost". I had therefore assumed that there was some inherent cost in creating the spell plus the cost of apprentices, "cost/week of ingredients" plus "Ingredients requried weekly...". Does it make sense? No, I guess not. It should just be the cost of the wizards, apprentices, ingredients. Did that bother me for years? Well, sort of.
So, if the player character is the wizard creating the magical item, you would reduce the costs per week for the wizard's self-service; this assumes the wizard has enough to live on without working during the period the magical item is being made. Where did you get the $200/wk for the wizard? I don't recall reading that anywhere. I thought the cost of the wizard fluctuated based on IQ. I'm looking at page 29 of ITL where it states how much various IQ wizards would cost. I'm assuming you used the $200.00 per week from the table of jobs. The computer program adjusts for DX while the cost of the wizard is based on IQ. I suppose one could just substitute DX for IQ in the text and just use the same costs.
David, thanks. If you had written the tutorial on making/costing magical items (hint), I think it would have been more easily comprehended. Thanks.

I'll just pull one out at random and deconstruct it backwards for you. Let'stake the thirteen week one at five thousand and five silver. 5005 / 13 weeks to make = $385 385 - cost/week $35 = $350 350 - $200 Town Wizard pay = 150 150 / $25 pay = 6 apprenticesOf course if you move the Adjusted DX up high enough the item will always be on time, and the actual "cost" to produce the item will be more consistent. So to sum up; the $18,000 is book list price, the $8155.00 is the actual cost to produce that item over 13 weeks, and now it is easy to determine the profit made on the item. With a lower adjusted DX the cost to produce varies wildly.Hope that helps.
