When I first started using Unix in the 80s, I had not yet read Heinlein. Upon trying to use the 'cpio' command, I got a strange error, something like: "don't grok device blah blah"... I then tried 'man grok' to no avail.
Later, when I was eating dinner with my roommate (a huge sci-fi fan), he laughed his head off when I explained what I had done.
Unix is indeed a strange land...
