Uh...I'm confused...am I supposed to clip or not?

In the ether it's considered rude to include the entire post when one
replies. One should be clipping out the non-essential bits to save reader's
time and bandwidth. However, when replying to a specific point, it's
considered good form to include the bit to which one may be responding.

So who are the nimrods? Are they the ones that include the entire previous
chain of posts? Are the nimrods the ones who don't include any of the
previous posts and only make reference to them? Or are the nimrods the folks
who clip out the non-essential bits for the sake of clarity and brevity? It
would seem, going by the wording in your post, that you seem to think all of
the above are nimrods...except, perhaps, yourself.
