Re: (TFT) Are large monsters like trolls, ogres, and giants good as PC's?

Various comments, without checking the rules:

* I thought trolls were just one-hex creatures. Or, maybe they are 1, 2, or 3 hexes, independent of ST? In the AW example the troll is one hex.

* I was sure at one point that trolls explicitly never use weapons. I remember because there was one in my campaign whom a wizard had put a geas on to compel him to use a battleaxe. Incidentally, this troll ended up fighting the most experienced adventurer in my game world, and because he was translated to GURPS (which takes both the weapon and the user's strength into account for damage) he very nearly killed him in one blow.

* Not what you asked, but Reptile Men in particular can be quite effective too.

* I agree that clever movement of multi-hex creatures makes a huge difference in their effectiveness. That or the circumstances, particularly the current number of their enemies and allies. A giant can be very deadly against one or two humans, or if he has friends. Strength lies in numbers, and in using tactics to match a situation.

* Dragons, on the other hand, also have flight and their most dangerous attribute, especially for older ones, can be intelligence, which makes them very dangerous if they play to maximize their advantages. They can be killed by enough human fighters, but why would they choose to fight at odds when they can fly away? And come back later, pick people off one at a time, drop rocks from high above, breath some fire and then fly away and rest and return later, etc.
