Re: (TFT) Magic Item Creation Example?
So I got caught shopping for the house today.
I went ahead and re-maped this morning, I can do measured drawings in AutoCad but I haven't figured my loads, posts, or beams yet so I got work to do before that stage.
I have much of that generalized already, so it's more the grunt work of detailing rather than any kind of conceptualization issue here.
Well, then I started redecorating.
I've gotten quite a few new mail order catalogues since I've been back on the air.
I use the shipping info to make scaled counters and make sure they fit into the rooms.
Even through the doors.
Most furnature falls within a pretty standard range, and this isn't rocket science, so it takes susprisingly few rectangles to cover the standard stuff.
A 6' hero fits 3d within the box formed by 4 standard height, 2 dot wide legos.
At attention anyway.
At the BattleMap scale anyhoo.
1 1/4" square = 13" (go ahead and think square foot here. If they are going to argue about what square EXACTALLY, then I just magnify the hex and we get more detailed.)
3d puzzle foam is 1/4" thick, inexpensive, sold as packing materal at Office Depot I think, and dosn't have to be cut into puzzles.
Make players build their own house, heck I start them in an outpost not much better than Dances With Wolves...
Make 'em bring their own settlers!

(Civ style -As Pope, you've had to "upgrade" the Temple in Rome. Now, in the middle of a battle, the artist you commissioned has shown up with a new plan. It is remarkably ambitious, perhaps too much so and the imputant fool is asking even more for his commision, this postairity bit is expensive, especally in the middle of a war.
Troops are in the field in this "Republic" (? best choice?) and the Temple makes one angry citizen content.
In Civ, I'd make the Temple build get halfway, then give the option to either cancel or keep building at double shields.)

Most of the time, I've just got the History Chanel, or Discovery on.
Every once in a while an interesting fact blurbs out and I jot it down.
2.5oz black powder (?) blew 250lb anvil 50' up.
Modern powder ~x2 early Ren stuff (TFT ITL).
Origional black powder ~ x4 longbow (real English yew, no clalk in the soil around here so Pacific North West yew wouldn't make quite as strong a bow... i.e. +/- can be assigned to superiour or inferiour materials.
