RE: (TFT) Philips Deep Sea Float
Jay,
There's a saying you might know:
"The English think 100 miles is a long distance.
Americans think 100 years is a long time."
:o)
Hull and Nottingham cities are about 80 miles apart.
It's not a long distance in miles, but there's an awful lot of stuff along the way between.
Nottinghamshire is a neighbouring county to Yorkshire, but I suspect that counties means more in Europe than they do in USA, even if the physical areas are similar.
Possibly closer to States. Some of our traditional counties still relate back to Celtic kindoms, roman administrative areas or Anglo Saxon kingdoms. Up until recently (1900's) there were distinct ethnic features of the residents of neighbouring counties. e.g. Essex men were Saxons, Suffolk men were Angles.
We're more mixed these days.
Grimsby is across the Humber in Lincolnshire (Terra Incognita). When I was a student in Hull we had a visiting lecturer recruiting for his Uni. At one point he invited us to visit him if we ever came 'south of the river'. Crossing the Humber was quite a leap for us. Literally so until the bridge opened in 1982, you had to jump on the ferry, or go round by Goole. We thought he meant the Humber, he meant the Thames!
You mention Beowulf, I think of the Parisi and the Brigantes, of the Northumbrian kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia. That's before we get to the Norman conquest and the establishment of the feuadal system. These people lived where I live now.
Gods' I've caught Jayitis!
Stopping now for my sanities sake,
Regards,
Chris

I have managed to shock myself.
I got it right!
Thanks for the info Chris!
Nottinghams south west of you guys too.
What a wonderful spot!
How in the world it washed up here, now...
It's beyond me.
I bastardized Fokker Fodder for flying Units of Wizards.
It's probably got something to do with that.
The copy of Beowulf I pulled that from was a 2000 translation by
R.M. Liuzza, a famious New Orleans restraunt family I used to work
for...
I'm gonna go dig out my copy of the Police.
