Jay,
 
   There are so many exciting new discoveries to relate I almost don't know where to start.  Remember the old guessing game that goes "is it animal, vegetable or mineral?"  This of course is part of the Classical method of categories and classifications.  The traditional animal or vegetable separation of the types of life.  The new method contains 3 branches of life.  What used to be considered slimes, oozes, and jellys in a science fiction sence are the third type.  You may remember them as vegetable like stuff that could "move on it's own" from back in the day.
 
Here is the new.  If an organism is in a relationship with another and the host dies, it can be considered a parasite.  But if they both survive, even lead a healthier life, they are considered symbiotic.  The type of cells that all animal life are made of turn out to look almost exactly like a slime cell and a vegetable cell in a symbiotic reationship.  Eukaryotic cells are one type.
