If you are looking for SciFi opponents beyond Hobbits In Space, you might consider ITL's Hymenoptera. These always struck me as being more suited to SF than Fantasy.

They don't use missile weapons, but their habit of scavenging and burrowing mean that your human troops have to go to them. The fight is likely to be at close range in confined quarters.

I have a hankering to do some "boarding action" -type starship
