Doesn't your interpretation of game states create most of the unrealism you are observing? 

What's wrong with the interpretation that grappling while remaining standing and using a large weapon is represented by the Step and Attack maneuver?

figures are in the same hex. It's only the rules that makes everyone 
fall down, which may be convenient for gameplay, but it's not terribly 
realistic to state that any sort of grappling results in everyone on 
the ground.
