Depends on what you mean by "early" computer game. There was an Avalon-Hill-branded Wooden Ships & Iron Men game circa 1995, with a simple captain's campaign mode, and PBEM play, which was a light adaptation of the boardgame. Not bad, not great. About ten years earlier than that, Strategic Simulations also published a (very good for the time) computer game in the same genre titled Broadsides. It was about as good as the 1995 game, though with different features. One of the cooler features was that the damage to the ships was visualized hit by hit.
