Interesting how this has gotten around to Luna.

My reason for suggesting growing flora underground was two-fold: 1) it's 
too cold for earth flora on the surface of Mars with the possible exception
of some arctic lichen or something, and 2) watering the plants would seem
to be impractical as it doesnt seem the water would stay around on the 
ground long enough to do the plants any good.

There's the idea of a Martian hothouse, I suppose.  I wonder how well that
would work ...
