should be noted: I have no problem with magic as a science, its just that one has to explain it much better that way, I find (if players research it, that is).

You're looking for principles that you can use, or you're looking for something new that you can reproduce. Magically, if you can reproduce it, it's a spell. And if you're looking for the various bases for magic, a good start might be Lyndon Hardy's The Master Of Five Magics.
