David,

Spear's the lowest ST weapon (in basic melee) that gets you a charge attack
with double damage (not sure it's overrated in that regard). That means you
can use the other points for DX to assure a hit. If you look up that
spear-guy's rival, it is a guy with Plate/Large_shield and Shortsword! It
confirms what Rick said about swapping in a guy with armor.
