There's probably a re-enactor around who can tell you for certain, but 
depending on the shield they could parry blows, absorb blows, and be used 
offensively to push or jab, and on the edge really hurt someone.  Plus, you 
can discard it and run like heck when your army loses!

The first thing a regular soldier acquires who plans to fight and stand 
ground is a shield and a weapon, probably a spear.  The last thing a 
civilized army discards is the same.  If you're going to run around 
skirmishing in cover (so NOT standing ground) especially if you plan to 
skirmish with a missile weapon, then you don't need the shield.

At the level of Melee, one might not need a shield.  But since characters 
usually need to stand ground, the game should provide incentive to get one 
and hold onto it.

Is it just me, or are shields comparatively underpowered? Considering
how widespread they were in various militaries throughout the world, and
how widespread they aren't among player-characters, it seems like
something's off.
