(TFT) A visit to the old stomping grounds
All THIS brings back memories...
The discussions of TFT, first on the Microgames list and now here, bring
back pleasant memories of the days that I was Line Editor for TFT (after
Steve Jackson's departure from Metagaming) and Greg Poehlein, Dave Tepool
and I (in our pre-Star Trek; The Role Playing Game days) were bouncing
around the summer convention circuit running the Metagaming booth and
selling micros to hundreds and hundreds of fans. At $3.95 a pop, no less.
Wish I could buy that much game for that little THESE days!
Those were good times, and the state of the game industry now is a lot
different. It pleases me that TFT has survived in the hands of lots of
players who remember it and still play the micros.
For those who aren't on the Microgames list, too, I've been discussing
the possibility of producing a micro-sized (or perhaps digest-sized)
product which would attempt to be a supertactical semi-RPG man-to-man
combat board game in the Melee style (along with a magical combat
companion game and maybe some solitaire adventures), based on Greg
Poehlein's PlainLabel Role Playing System / Pocket Fantasy RPG.
Greg and I are kicking around the possibilities on this right now, and I
expect to ask around a little at Origins this weekend to see just how
many newer gamers (as well as the old TFT fans like us) would be
interested in such a product.
Would you folks mind if I bounced a few of these ideas off the people in
this mailing list from time to time, as I have occasionally in the
Microgames list? It would help us to have some other die-hard TFT players
to give us some feedback.
And if any of you are going to be at Origins this weekend, look for the
heavy-set six-footer wearing a POCKET FANTASY button and buying half the
dice at the Chessex and Koplow booths. It'll probably be me. Stop and say
hi!
